Queenborough sea wall infested with ‘poisonous’ caterpillars

A beach-goer who came across an army of hairy caterpillars has warned dog owners to watch their pets due to the potentially poisonous creepy crawlies.

Aaron King, who found the infestation by the sea wall in Queenborough, Sheppey, said he “hadn’t seen anything like it in all his decades”.

The 35-year-old, who has lived in the town’s high street all his life, said: “I saw them all yesterday, at around 7pm.

“It was still quite warm along there and as there are a lot of weeds along the sea wall it is not unusual to see a few caterpillars.

“But last night they were everywhere, and all over the footpath. In all my decades I have never seen anything like this.

“There are always an odd couple of caterpillars in the summer but yesterday evening there must have been 100 or more. They were just everywhere.”

Aaron shared his discovery on Facebook and although there was uncertainty about what type of caterpillar was on the beach commenters were all saying to be wary of them.

One person commented: “I believe these are the ones that give a nasty rash if touched.”

Another said: “Don't touch them but also leave them in peace, they are wonderful.”

Someone else warned: “All hairy caterpillars give nasty rashes as the little spikes get in the skin and it’s hard to get them out.”

They look similar to drinker moth caterpillars and their hairs are understood to be an irritant.

This is to protect them from predators.
