Last weekend’s penalty miss won’t knock Cody McDonald, says Gills boss Justin Edinburgh.

The Gillingham striker had his spot-kick saved last Saturday as Edinburgh’s team lost their unbeaten record in a 2-1 defeat at Colchester.

Edinburgh said: “It was the first one he’s missed, it won’t be the last one but more times than not, Cody will win us games and score us goals. I expect the norm from Cody.

“He has taken penalties for me before and hadn’t missed.

“Scoring goals and winning games is part and parcel of being a striker. People will talk about the ones you miss rather than the ones you score.

“Everyone can say, ‘why didn’t Dacky take it’ or someone else? Cody is our penalty taker when he is on the pitch.

“What is the difference? Because he is coming back from injury? That is irrelevant, he has played three or four, he’s started four games and has scored penalties before. He will be fine – not a problem, whatsoever.”

McDonald has 64 goals in 152 appearances for the Gills but just three of those are penalties as Danny Kedwell took on that responsibility when he was at the club.
